One of only two novels by the Mexican writer and photographer Juan Rulfo (1917–1986), Pedro Páramo relates the story of a man named Juan Preciado, who travels to his recently deceased mother's hometown, Comala, on a quest to meet his father, only to find himself in a literal ghost town – an arid landscape where the dead and the alive routinely come together to mingle and talk. Rulfo's short novel, with its interweaving of the living and the dead, and its mix of the real with the fantastic, was impetus for this series of photographic images.
