The work of a book is done when the mind wanders.
To travel beyond the limits, and the facts, of our own lives, we will submit to artifices created by authors, to the characters and worlds their books provide. Similarly, a 'portrait of a person reading' presents another type of artifice: artist, sitter, and viewer are all participants in a silent dialogue, engaged in the triangular collaboration of portraiture. When the acts of posing, viewing, and being viewed make good the portrait’s innate promise of intimacy, it's another willing submission and voluntary deception.
